Better Business: Promoting Your Business on Facebook

Ken Hinton first started promoting Diamondback Restoration & Collision, his La Vernia, Texas-based restoration shop, on his personal Facebook profile page to improve his shop’s search engine rankings.

“I was submitting my website to a bunch of search engines and they said the more links that you get, the quicker you can be found on search engines,” he said. “I thought I would make another link [to my website] on Facebook. I started checking my web stats after that and [found] a lot of website hits came from Facebook, so it worked.”

Gunner's Great Garage: A Hot Rod Business Incubator

John Gunnell has more than 30 years of experience in the classic car industry, having written 85 books on the subject, and at times holding the title of editor and publisher of Old Cars Weekly. (He still writes a blog for the publication’s website.) In January, he decided to add hot rod business owner to his list of industry accomplishments when he opened Gunner’s Great Garage.

After seeing the effect that the slumping economy has had on small businesses, particularly those in the classic car industry, Gunnell had the idea of having these small businesses join together to survive and, hopefully, thrive.

Better Business: How to Improve Your Website’s Traffic

Currently, 74 percent of Internet users never make it past page one on a search engine when looking for something, according to a new story published by SEMA.

“Your material has to be found,” said Brian Offenberger, CEO of Phoenix-based Right On–No Bull Marketing, who led the “Jumpstart Your Internet Marketing” seminar at the 2009 SEMA Show. “You can have the best website in the world, but if people can’t find it, you’re done. Think about your own behavior. The only time you go past page one on a search engine is if you can’t find what you’re looking for or you’re researching a topic.”

If Rick Dore could begin his business all over again, he’d probably do everything exactly the way he did it before — with one little exception. Instead of churning out distinctive custom cars one after the other at a near break-neck speed, he’d ratchet it down to a more reasonable pace.
