New 302 Ford Crate Engine From Speedway Motors

The engine package has been dyno-tested and will deliver 300-plus horsepower and 320 lb/ft of torque.

Speedway Motors has just released its new 302 Ford Hot Rod Engine, a crate engine that delivers 300-plus horsepower and 320 lb./ft. of torque, said the company. It’s based on a block with a .040-inch overbore, premium cast crankshaft and a balanced rotating assembly with 9.6:1 pistons.

Tech Tip: Quality is Worth the Price

A customer (and a buddy) recently brought his nostalgia-flavor Ford Thunderbolt clone (equiped with a vintage 427 FE) to my shop, complaining of high engine temperature issues, primarily at idle. The water temp at idle would routinely reach in the area of 210 to 220 degrees F., often continuing to gradually climb even higher.  While not at a terminally fatal level, the concern was still there, especially because the engine still took a while to catch up and recover back to the 190 range.

If you’re after a simplified, almost-old-school look for a rod build, but want to take advantage of LS performance, a carbureted LS is the way to go. This engine (with a 4.000” stroke and aftermarket heads) pulled an easy 625 hp on the dyno.

The GM “LS” family of V8 engines represents the “new” generation of the venerable small block Chevy engine platform. While old-school diehards may be hesitant to embrace the new technology, the LS engine group offers outstanding horsepower, with many improvements with regard to oiling systems, cooling system and gasketing/sealing. It’s a great engine, and especially considering the range of readily available aftermarket performance parts, it’s easy to make power with the LS platform.
