Goodguys Launches New Texas Road Tour

Goodguys Rod & Customs will debut a new Texas Road Tour this fall that will take hot rodders from Goodguys headquarters in Pleasanton, Calif. to the 21st Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Only 50 spots are available for the seven-day tour set for Sept. 27-Oct. 3, according to Goodguys.

The 1,969-mile road tour will travel through California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and stop at all of the Southwest’s finest rod shops, car collections, museums and race shops.

The newly built, all-yellow 525-hp Goodguys G/RS 1969 Camaro will pace the tour.

‘Checkered Past” 1940 Ford Takes Home Street Rod D’Elegance Crown at Goodguys’ Del Mar Nationals

Ron Cizek’s “Checkered Past” 1940 Ford won the Goodguys 2013 March Performance Street Rod d’Elegance Award at the 13^th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals, April 5-7 in Del Mar, Calif.

First introduced the hot rodding world in March when it won the Ridler Award at the Detroit Autorama, the cranberry-hued 1940 Ford was originally a build started by Cizek as a weekend project. It was finished and coach-built by his partner Andy Leach and the talented team at Cal Automotive Creations in Omaha, Neb.

Leach apprenticed for six years under Troy Trepanier before joining forces with Cizek. “Checkered Past” is Cal Automotive Creations first completed concept-to-finished-show-car project, according to a Goodguys press release.

The annual Goodguys Del Mar Nationals takes place this weekend in Del Mar, California.

Spend this spring weekend at a car show, such as Goodguys’ Del Mar Nationals. Events like this, and the six others detailed below, provide great opportunities to show off your best work, meet new customers and support community organizations.

The first Twilight Cruise of 2013 will be held on Wednesday, April 3 at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, California. Hosted by Cal-Rods Car Club, the event will run from 4-8 p.m. and is open to all 1970-and-earlier rods, customs, classics and muscle cars. The event will include raffles, a 50/50 drawing, food and celebrity photo opportunities. All proceeds from the event will benefit the NHRA Motorsports Museum. For more information, click here.

A free NHRA driver autograph session and FanFest will be held on Thursday, April 4 at the New York New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The event will kick off the NHRA Nationals weekend, which will take place at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event on Thursday will include autograph signings from 6-8 p.m., a driver question-and-answer session, music and door prizes. Drivers scheduled to participate include Antron Brown, Jack Beckman, Tony Schumacher, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, Spencer Massey, Johnny Gray and more. For more information, go to www.lvms.com.

’51 Merc Custom Wins Goodguys 2013 Mother’s Custom of the Year Award

1951 Mercury custom wins the Goodguys 2013 Mother’s Custom of the Year award

Nick Rogers’ radical 1951 Mercury custom won the Goodguys 2013 Mother’s Custom of the Year award at the Goodguys 31st All American Get-Together presented by Specialty Sales Classics March 23-24 in Pleasanton, Calif.

Rogers’ candy-blue Merc beat out a stellar national field of customs, collecting its second major award this spring. The car also won the coveted Custom d’Elegance crown at February’s Sacramento AutoRama, according to a Goodguys press release.

The ’51 Merc was finished and produced for the show season by Bill Ganahl’s South City Rod & Custom and started with “humble beginnings.”

Events are taking place all over the country and Canada this weekend that allow you to show off your shop’s latest project car, honor industry legends and network with other builders, including the Goodguys’ 31^st All-American Get Together and the Hot Rod Magazine Homecoming. The Megaspeed Custom Car and Truck Show takes place Friday, March 22- Sunday, March 24 at the International Centre in Toronto, Canada. The event will feature pro wrestler Bill Goldberg as the Grand Marshall, and will include appearances by Chip Foose (in the BASF booth on Saturday), Candy Clark from “American Graffiti,” Playboy model Rachelle Wilde and more. Event highlights will include display vehicles by Rad Rides by Troy, NHL star Rick Nash and Kreater Custom Motorcycles, a bikini contest, vendors and live music. Zoo to You will be presenting a display of exotic animals for kids. Admission is $20 a day for adults, $10 for kids ages 6-13 and free to those 5 and under. The Riverside International Automotive Museum will host its annual Legends of Riverside Racing Film Festival and Gala on Saturday, March 23, plus a “Meet and Greet” on the evening of Friday, March 22 for all ticket holders. The event, which will take place at the Museum in Riverside, California, will honor racing legend Bob Bondurant. Event highlights will include a presentation of special awards, a silent auction of racing memorabilia, an autograph signing by drivers and VIPs, cocktail party, live auction, dinner and more. The 2013 Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show takes place Thursday, March 14- Saturday, March 16 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. The only business-to-business trade show for the hot rod and restoration industry, the HRR Trade Show features a full Education & Training Program, in which industry manufacturers will present seminars on their products and provide valuable tech and installation tips. The 15^th Annual Industry Reception & Anniversary Celebration will take place on Friday night at 5 p.m. and will feature music, food, drinks and raffles. The coveted Golden Builder Award will be presented at the Grand Opening Breakfast on Friday morning, as will the Innovation Awards, which go to the New Product Showcase winners. The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing will host the induction of nine new members into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, located in Gainesville, Florida, on Thursday, March 14, during a star-studded induction dinner and ceremony at the Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites. The event will be presented by the NHRA and Summit Racing Equipment. The nine new inductees will be Dave Boertman, Wally Booth, Bernie Fedderly, Harry Hibler, race team Hirata, Hobbs & Vodnik, K.S. This weekend is filled with some of the season’s biggest car shows and events including the Goodguy’s Spring Nationals, which kick-starts the association’s 2013 event schedule, and the Detroit Autorama. Here’s information on these events, as well as five other events taking place around the country this weekend.

The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association kicks off its 30th Anniversary season this weekend with the 4^th Spring Nationals, taking place Friday, March 8- Sunday, March 10 at the Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona. Event organizers are expecting thousands of 1972-and-earlier show cars to be on display. Other event highlights include the Goodguys AutoCross, which is an electronically timed vehicle speed and agility course; a midway of big rig tractor trailers, high-performance parts and accessory vendors, a used car parts swap meet, car corral and a model car program sponsored by Revell. The event will also feature the first All American Sunday of 2013, in which owners of American-powered show cars and trucks of all years, makes and models will be put on display. The 61^st Annual Detroit Autorama takes place Friday, March 8- Sunday, March 10 at the COBO Center in Detroit, Michigan. Billed as “America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show,” the event will feature the 50^th Anniversary Ridler’s Ball on Friday from 6- 9 p.m., which will include the announcement of the “Great 8” contenders. Other event highlights will include a “Ridler’s Row” display, which will feature over 25 past Ridler Award winners; a Toy-o-Rama collectible toy display, Gene Winfield’s Chop Shop exhibit, the Cavalcade of Customs car display, a tribute to 1955-1957 Thunderbirds, a display of musician Kid Rock’s personal vehicles, the “Nitro” Vintage Dragster and Funny Car Cacklefest, the Auto Art Panel Jam & Charity Auction, the “Miss Autorama” Pinup Contest on Saturday, live bands, celebrity guests and more. Engine-Building Competitions Added to Select 2013 Goodguys Events

Team Motive Gear-Hot Rodders of Tomorrow

Two engine-building competitions, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge and the COMP Cams Builders Duel presented by Snap-on, will be contested at select Goodguys events this season.

The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge features four to six teams of high school students competing against one another to tear down and rebuild a small-block V-8 engine to win trophies and scholarships. The competition will take place at the Goodguys 20th Summer Get-Together presented by Specialty Sales Classics, June 1-2 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, according to a Goodguys news release.

A hit at the SEMA Show last fall, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge travels the country annually staging competitions and is looking to add as many as three to four more Goodguys events in 2014.

During the COMP Cams Builders Duel presented by Snap-on, two-man teams compete to assemble and crank a small-block Chevy engine in the shortest amount of time to win COMP Cams gift certificates. The competition will take place at the Goodguys 16th PPG Nationals, July 12-14 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, and at the Goodguys 21st Lone Star Nationals, Oct. 4-6 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

Goodguys Announces Winners of Homebuilt Heaven Awards

Roger Jetter’s 1955 Cadillac from Aurora, Colorado (shown above) was recently named the winner of Speedway Motors’ Traditional Homebuilt Heaven competition, and Charles and Dotti Ott’s 1955 Oldsmobile from Santa Maria, California was named winner of the Homebuilt Heaven competition.

The Homebuilt Heaven award highlights rods, customs, classics and muscle cars that are hand built in owners’ home garages, while the Traditional Homebuilt Heaven award also highlights rods and customs that are built in owners’ home garages but emphasizes more traditionally styled vehicles. Winners are decided by votes on an online contest page.

Goodguys Founder Receives Brizio Family ‘Driven’ Award

Goodguys Rod & Custom Association founder and chairman Gary Meadors received the Brizio Family “Driven” Award for his 1948 Chrysler Town & Country at the 64th Annual Grand National Roadster Show awards ceremony Jan. 27 in Pomona, California.

The award is presented annually to a pre-’49 street-driven rod. Meadors’ 1948 Chrysler Town & Country was displayed at the event in the Hot Rods & Hobbies booth, builders of the long, lean and low convertible, according to a news release by Goodguys.
