Editor’s Corner: A Day in the Sun at Goodguys’ Del Mar Nationals

The Goodguys Del Mar Nationals is one of my favorite car shows of the year to attend. Not only are you close enough to the beach that you can smell the ocean air, but there’s so much to see and do. This year’s show, which took place last weekend, offered a ton of great vendors (many of which brought a car or two to showcase in their booth), as well as the annual Editor’s Shootout Autocross. To add to the “beach” theme, there was even a special “Good Wood” section set aside for woodies.

Also worth mentioning was the unique collection of restored 1960s dragster in the special “Nitro Thunderfest” section. We were on-hand to watch as Bobby Hanson’s “Wynn’s Spoiler” was (very loudly) fired up for the crowd. The fans loved it and it was great to see these vintage drag cars on display.

The level of cars on display really impressed us; we saw a lot of “odd-ball” vehicles, along with a ton of Bel Airs, classic trucks and woodies. The Del Mar Nationals, as always, was a great day in the sun.

Below are just a few of the cool cars we photographed last weekend at the show. Be sure to check back for a photo gallery featuring some of the amazing classic trucks we saw.

Low-Slung Ford Roadster Takes Home Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance Award at Del Mar

Jeff Chandler’s low-slung steel 1933 Ford roadster took home the Goodguys 2011 Street Rod d’Elegance award at the Del Mar Nationals, held last weekend in Del Mar, California.

Chandler’s red-and-black roadster was hand-crafted by the team at Steve’s Auto Restorations (S.A.R.) in Portland, Oregon. Designed by Chris Ito, Chandler’s car was originally supposed to be one of 24 concept steel roadsters produced by S.A.R.; however, after a change of plans, it became the only roadster of its kind in existence. It was a finalist for the 2011 AMBR Award at this year’s Grand National Roadster Show.

“We honestly did not expect this,” said Chandler, who hails from Rancho Santa Fe, California. “Steve and his team have done an outstanding job with this car.”

Joe Proski’s immaculate 1950 Mercury was named the Goodguys 2011 Mother’s West Coast Custom of the Year at the 29th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California, this past weekend.

The merlot Merc was redone last year by Doug Jerger and the team at Squeeg’s Customs of Chandler, Arizona. In its previous life, it had been eggplant purple with black wall tires and wheels from Boyd Coddington.

“After years of running the car in its ‘90s trim, Squeeg Jerger, a longtime friend, talked Joe into a complete overhaul, transforming the car from a dated custom rod into a timeless, traditional custom,” Goodguys reported. “The Squeeg’s team [relocated] the bumpers, adding a drip rail, reworked the doors and new grille, completely reworked the interior and smoothed it all out before applying the custom mixed PPG merlot paint.”

Exciting Prizes to Be Given Away at HRR Trade Show Industry Reception

The HRR Trade Show offers plenty of networking opportunities. However, one of the best ways to meet up with old industry friends and connect with new companies and potential customers is to attend the Industry Reception, held Friday night immediately after the trade show ends. The party will take place in the Sagamore Ballroom of the Indianapolis Convention Center.

This year’s party theme will be “American Made,” saluting products made in the U.S.A. Attendees and exhibitors can enjoy a menu of All-American foods like burgers, fries, shakes—and even apple pie. It doesn’t get any more American than that. Party attendees will also be treated to free-flowing beer, compliments of the HRR Trade Show.

Party attendees will also have the chance to play a game of pool or foosball with friends, or partake in some NASCAR remote control car racing, which is new this year.

In addition to great food and friends, the Industry Reception will offer attendees the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes during the raffle, which will take place at the end of the party. Raffle tickets will be given out at the door.
