Rick Dore-Built 1937 Lincoln Zephyr Named 2012 West Coast Custom of the Year

A low-slung 1937 Lincoln Zephyr called “VooDoo Priest” took home the 2012 Goodguys Mother’s West Coast Custom of the Year award last weekend at the Goodguys 30^th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California. The car is the latest creation from Metallica frontman James Hetfield and custom car builder Rick Dore of Rick Dore Kustoms.

Hatfield and Dore have designed several other award-winning builds, including a 1936 Auburn boat-tail speedster called “Slow Burn,” which took home the 2010 West Coast Custom of the Year award.

For their latest creation, Hetfield and Dore wanted to build a traditional custom that played on existing factory styling, according to Goodguys. The Zephyr features a custom-mixed paint job (Candy Apple Red over Raspberry paint) done by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio in Concord, California. Keith Dean lowered the lid and did the “Coke bottled” rockers/running boards, as well as the molded 1938 Zephyr rear quarters and other custom work.

1939 Buick Wins 2011 America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod Title at West Coast Nationals

A four-door 1939 Buick owned by Harold Wiley was named the Goodguys 2011 Flowmaster America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod last weekend at the 25^thGoodguys West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton, California. This marks the first time a four-door car has taken the title, according to Goodguys.

The two-tone Buick was built by Kindig-It Design of Salt Lake City and blends traditional classic lines with a low-slung modern street rod stance. The design team didn’t alter any of the car’s factory lines in an effort to keep it as stock as possible, according to Goodguys. Highlights of the car include an updated factory chassis, a RideTech air suspension and 17-inch “Smoothie” wheels by Intro that feature custom retro center caps that were designed in-house by the team at Kin-Dig-It.

Weekend Car Shows & Events Roundup

The Food Lion AutoFair in North Carolina and Goodguys’ 25^th West Coast Nationals in California have enthusiasts on the coasts covered this weekend, but there are plenty of car shows, cruises and other events for everyone in between, including those detailed below. The Food Lion AutoFair takes place Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The four-day event is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors and will feature a car show, vendors, a car corral and a collector car auction. Featured vehicle exhibits at the show include a 100^th anniversary of Chevrolet display, movie and television vehicles, and the world’s lowest street-legal vehicle. Autobooks-Aerobooks Car Night takes place Thursday at Maloof Racing Engines in San Gabriel, California. Car show attendees can get tech advice from the engine shop’s build team during the event, which will also feature music and food. Owner Sammy Maloof is also a stuntman who’s worked on films including “Mission Impossible 4″ and he will be giving attendees rides in one of his stunt cars. Goodguys presents the 25^th West Coast Nationals Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California. The event will welcome over 3,500 rods, customs and classics through 1972 competing for awards including America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod, PPG Dream Car and Moals Builders Choice Awards. Goodguys Announces Schedule for Next Week’s ‘Hot Rod Week’

Goodguys has announced the schedule for the upcoming Hot Rod Week on its website. The four-day guided tour of shops and places of interests kicks off on Monday, Aug. 22, and runs through Thursday, Aug. 25, one day before the start of Goodguys’ 25^thWest Coast Nationals in Pleasanton, California, which runs Friday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Aug. 28.

“Hot Rod Week serves as a fun activity for locals as well as out of town visitors attending the annual West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton,” representatives from Goodguys said on the association’s website.

The free tour requires no reservations. Those wishing to participate are asked to meet at the Pleasanton Hilton at 8 a.m. each morning to join up with the tour group. All tours will leave the back parking lot of the Hilton at 8:30 a.m. sharp, according to Goodguys.

Goodguys Releases 2011 Events Schedule

The first Wix Filters Speedway Nationals will be held September 16-18 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has announced that it will stage 21 events in 2011. The event lineup features 18 national events for rods, customs, classics and muscle cars through 1972 vintage and three “Get-Togethers” in Northern California which welcome all years, American-made or powered specialty vehicles.

The schedule also features three new events led by the 1st Wix Filters Speedway Nationals, Sept. 16-18 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event will feature over 3,000 rods, customs, classics and muscle cars, plus vendor exhibits, an AutoCross, swap meet, track cruise and much more, according to Goodguys. Other new events include the 1st Spring Lone Star Nationals, March 18-20 at Texas Motor Speedway and the 1st Fall Del Mar Nationals, Nov. 25-27.

Goodguys West Coast Nationals to Welcome Muscle Cars Through 1972

Muscle cars will dot the landscape for the first time in the 24-year history of the West Coast Nationals as rods, customs, classics and muscle cars from over 15 states converge on Pleasanton, California on August 27-29.

In addition to celebrating the arrival of muscle cars, the Goodguys staff will be looking for a finalist for the 2010 Muscle Car of the Year award as well as winners of other awards such as “Mighty Muscle,” “Cool Camaro”, “Ford Muscle,” “Mopar Muscle,” “Chevy Muscle,” “Mighty Mustang,” and “Slick ’60s.”

'Slow Burn' Named 2010 Goodguys West Coast Custom of the Year

Rick Dore was working on "Slow Burn" when HRR profiled him in November 2009.

Metallica front man James Hetfield teamed with famed stylist Rick Dore to create “Slow Burn,” a pristine 1936 Auburn boat tail speedster that ended up being named the 2010 Goodguys West Coast Custom of the Year at the 28th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California. This was the second time in two years that one of Hetfield’s cars landed in the top five for the award; his 1937 Ford was a finalist at last year’s event.
