A low-slung 1937 Lincoln Zephyr called “VooDoo Priest” took home the 2012 Goodguys Mother’s West Coast Custom of the Year award last weekend at the Goodguys 30th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California. The car is the latest creation from Metallica frontman James Hetfield and custom car builder Rick Dore of Rick Dore Kustoms.
Hatfield and Dore have designed several other award-winning builds, including a 1936 Auburn boat-tail speedster called “Slow Burn,” which took home the 2010 West Coast Custom of the Year award.
For their latest creation, Hetfield and Dore wanted to build a traditional custom that played on existing factory styling, according to Goodguys. The Zephyr features a custom-mixed paint job (Candy Apple Red over Raspberry paint) done by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio in Concord, California. Keith Dean lowered the lid and did the “Coke bottled” rockers/running boards, as well as the molded 1938 Zephyr rear quarters and other custom work.
