Goodguys Announces Dates for 2013 Friday Night Vintage Drags

The dates have been released for Goodguys’ 2013 Friday Night Vintage Drags. The races will be held on two nights next summer.

The first Vintage Drags night will be held on July 12 at the National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio, as part of the 16^th PPG Nationals. The event will feature exhibition vehicles including nostalgia gassers, as well as a full complement of sportsman classes, according to Goodguys.

The second Friday Night Vintage Drags night will be held on July 26 at the Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. The event will offer over 300 sportsman entries in five classes, in addition to the headliners. Special exhibition entries will include nitro-burning funny cars.

Both Goodguys Friday Night Drags nights will have identical sportsman classes. NHRA Heritage Series rules will apply and all competition vehicles must be pre-1973.

Ringbrothers and The Roadster Shop Owners to Select Builder’s Choice Awards at PPG Nationals

Former Goodguys Trendsetter award winners Mike and Jim Ring of Ringbrothers, and Phil and Jeremy Gerber of The Roadster Shop will select the Goodguys Builder’s Choice awards at the 15th PPG Nationals July 6–8 in Columbus, Ohio, the association has announced.

Weekend Car Shows & Events Roundup

Continue the Fourth of July celebration this weekend at a car show where you can display your latest creations, meet new customers, get inspiration for future projects and support local organizations. Shows being held this weekend include Goodguys 15th Goodguys PPG Nationals and the 12th Annual George Barris Charity Car Show. Information on these and eight additional shows is listed below. Goodguys presents the 15th Goodguys PPG Nationals Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The event will feature over 6,000 rods, customs, classics, muscle cars, street machines and trucks through 1972 competing for awards including 2012 Street Rod of the Year and 2012 Street Machine of the Year. The event will also include AutoCross, a swap meet, cars-for-sale corral, poker run, model and pedal car show, vendor and manufacturer displays, and seminars. Camaro Superfest 2012 takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Riverside Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Goodguys & Superformance to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of the Shelby Cobra at PPG Nationals

The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association and Superformance LLC are teaming up this summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra. To celebrate the special occasion, Superformance will present a special “Snake Pit” at the Goodguys 15th PPG Nationals July 6–8 in Columbus, Ohio.

The special parking area will be held Saturday, July 7 from 7am to noon and is exclusive to Shelby-licensed Cobras.

“Having the Shelby Cobra name associated with our biggest event of the year is a distinct pleasure,” said Goodguys President Marc Meadors in a statement released by the association. “For years, the Shelby Cobra has embodied performance and is truly a uniquely American hot rod.”

1932 Ford Three-Window Named Goodguys 2011 Street Rod of the Year

An original steel 1932 Ford three-window coupe built by Dave Lane of Fastlane Rod Shop was named the Goodguys 2011 Street Rod of the Year last weekend at the PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. This marks the third time a car built by Lane has won the prestigious award.

The mustard-yellow coupe is owned by Phil and Debbie Becker of Dwight, Illinois and was built by Lane in just under two years.

“Lane [is] a throwback to the European coach builders of the 20th century [and] has a unique build style,” Goodguys reported. “He only takes on one car at a time. He hires no outside help. He is truly an old school craftsman whose singular focus is to turn out the best product possible.”

The coupe features a subtle ¾-inch chop and a repositioned rear window that leans forward slightly to give it a more refined look. Lane pie-cut the hood and curved the spreader bars to match the body contour, which required a complete reshaping of the gas tank.

Top Builders Show off Their Work at 2011 PPG Nationals

For 14 years, the hot rodding community has gathered in Columbus, Ohio, for the annual Goodguys PPG Nationals. Last weekend, builders from all over the country came to the Ohio Expo Center to show off their latest projects, sell product, and meet with new and existing customers.

The Ringbrothers brought several of its vehicles, including the 1970 Mustang “Dragon,” which was in the running for the Street Machine of the Year Award. Its exhibit space was also used to display some of the shop’s latest products.

The team from RadRides by Troy were also displaying at the show. In addition to products and completed vehicles, RadRides was also displaying a bare metal 1960 Torino that’s currently in progress at the shop. The car is being built for well-known car collector George Poteet.

Over 6,000 rods, customs, muscle cars, trucks and street machines from 1972-and-earlier were expected to be on display at the weekend event, according to Goodguys.

1967 Nova Named Goodguys 2011 Street Machine of the Year

Alex Covington’s high-tech, low-slung 1967 Nova “Innovator” was named the Goodguys 2011 Street Machine of the Year at the 14^th PPG Nationals, held last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The Nova was built by Jeremy and Phil Gerber of the Roadster Shop in Mundelein, Illinois.

Covington, who hails from Clover, South Carolina, enlisted the help of the Gerber brothers to build his dream car, which he wanted to be able to use as a daily driver. “The Gerber’s vision for the Nova [combined] an American classic with cutting-edge innovation and masterful build quality,” Goodguys reported.

Every panel on the car has been reworked and redesigned. Other body modifications including chopping the top ¾ inches, reshaping and sloping the fenders, creating new body lines and wheel wells, and creating a new rocker panel profile that continues around the entire vehicle. The headlights, grille assembly and taillight bezels were completely redesigned and hand-fabricated. For the paint, the Gerbers used PPG white and complemented it with custom satin accents of charcoal, silver and bright yellow.

PPG’s Cristina Fronzaglia Named Goodguys 2011 Woman of the Year

Cristina Fronzaglia, manager of marketing and communications for PPG‘s Refinish division, was named the 2011 Goodguys Woman of the Year at a special ceremony held last weekend at the 14th PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

“[Cristina] embodies all that is good about the hot rodding industry,” said Goodguys’ John Drummond, in a statement released by the association. “Goodguys, as well as the entire automotive aftermarket, is richer for her many contributions.”

Fronzaglia started as a sales trainee at PPG and worked her way up to her current position. She acts as the “go-to” person for promoting PPG’s line of custom colors and paint systems.

“Her creativity and boundless energy as a promoter of our industry made her an easy choice for the prestigious honor,” said Drummond.

Goodguys Trendsetters to Select Builder’s Choice Winners in Columbus

Goodguys has announced that two former Goodguys “Trendsetter Award” winners, Alan Johnson and Curt Ukasik, will be on hand at this year’s 14th PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, to select the winners of the coveted Builder’s Choice awards. Johnson and Ukasik will hand-pick 10 awards each for a total of 20 Builder’s Choice awards at the event, which takes place July 8-10.

Johnson, the 2000 Goodguys Trendsetter, currently runs Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden, Alabama, and is known for notable rods, customs and muscle cars including the “G Force Cuda” and Doug Cooper’s “Deucenberg B400.”

Ukasik, the 2010 Goodguys Trendsetter, burst onto the scene several years back when his company RPM Hot Rods built the 2009 Hot Rod of the Year. Ukasik and his team then built the “Boss Snake” Goodguys Giveaway car in 2010.

Inaugural Barry Lobeck Memorial Award to Be Presented at Goodguys PPG Nationals

Goodguys has announced that a new award will be given away at the 14^th PPG Nationals this year to honor the memory of Midwest hot rodding icon Barry Lobeck. Barry’s wife Ginny, as well as the staff of Lobeck’s V8 Hot Rod Parts, will select the winner of the award at the event, which takes place July 8–10 in Columbus, Ohio.

A native of Springfield, Lobeck had a reputation for building low-slung, traditionally styled hot rods. He became a staple of the Midwest hot rod scene after his flamed 1940 Ford coupe landed on the cover of Hot Rod magazine, according to Goodguys. He and his wife ran Lobeck’s V8 Shop & Hot Rod Parts, as well as Just a Hobby chassis shop, both of which are located in Cleveland, Ohio, until Barry’s death in January 2011.

Starting this year, the award will be selected annually at the Goodguys PPG Nationals marking a new tradition in his native Ohio.
